Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Sofia – City Tour

Welcome to Bulgaria! Upon arrival in Sofia, you will be greeted by your local guide and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, we embark on a guided walking tour of the capital.
Discover the stunning Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the second-largest Orthodox cathedral in the Balkans, and explore other landmarks including the National Theater “Ivan Vazov”, the Parliament Building, the historic Central Mineral Baths, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, the Russian Church of St. Nicholas, and the Church of St. Sofia.
Overnight in Sofia.

Day 2Sofia – Septemvri – Velingrad

After breakfast, we travel to Septemvri, the starting point of Bulgaria’s last remaining narrow-gauge railway. Over the next three days, we will journey in stages along its full 125 km route to Dobrinishte.
Today’s train ride takes us to Velingrad, known as the “spa capital of the Balkans.” After lunch, we head to the Tsepina Fortress, perched at 1,136 m above sea level. A short hike leads us to this historic site, which has been home to a Thracian sanctuary, a medieval monastery, and later a fortified town with castles, churches, and a citadel.
Enjoy some leisure time to relax and take advantage of the town’s famous spa facilities.
Overnight in Velingrad.

Day 3Velingrad – Bansko

This morning, we continue our scenic ride on the Rhodope narrow-gauge railway to Bansko, stopping at Avramovo Station, the highest railway station in Bulgaria and the entire Balkan Peninsula (1,267 m). From here, our support vehicle takes us to Belmeken Reservoir (1,923 m), where we stroll along the dam and enjoy breathtaking mountain views.
If time permits, we’ll take a short hike near “Little Tooth” Peak before reboarding the train in the afternoon and continuing to Bansko.
Hotel check-in, dinner, and overnight in Bansko.

Day 4Bansko – Dobrinishte – Bansko

After breakfast, we take a short train ride to the final station on the Rhodope line, Dobrinishte. From there, a chairlift carries us up to Bezbog Hut in the Pirin Mountains, where we enjoy a refreshing hike in the alpine surroundings or to the picturesque Popovo Lake.
Return to Bansko for an overnight stay.

Day 5Bansko – Kovachevitsa – Devin

Following breakfast, we drive deep into the Rhodope Mountains, visiting the charming villages of Kovachevitsa and Leshten, famous for their authentic rustic atmosphere and centuries-old stone houses.
We then continue to the spa town of Devin, nestled in the heart of the Rhodopes.
Hotel check-in, dinner, and overnight in Devin.

Day 6Exploring Devin and Its Surroundings

After breakfast, enjoy a full day of exploration in the stunning Rhodope region. Highlights include:

  • Yagodina Cave – one of Bulgaria’s longest and most beautiful caves
  • Buynovo Gorge – a dramatic river canyon
  • The Devil’s Throat Cave – shrouded in legend and mystery
  • Eagle’s Eye Viewpoint – offering spectacular panoramic vistas
  • Trigrad Gorge – a breathtaking natural wonder

Alternatively, take time to relax and enjoy the luxurious spa and wellness facilities at your hotel.
Dinner and overnight in Devin.

Day 7Devin – Plovdiv – Sofia

After breakfast, we head toward Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second-largest city and European Capital of Culture 2019. En route, we stop at the Yustina Winery for a tasting of fine local wines and an introduction to Bulgarian winemaking traditions.
In Plovdiv, we explore the enchanting Old Town, with its beautifully preserved 18th- and 19th-century houses, cobblestone streets, and lush gardens. We also visit the Ancient Roman Theater, the Roman Stadium, and, for those interested, the newly opened Bishop’s Basilica, a stunning site featuring intricate mosaics and archaeological treasures.
We then return to Sofia for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8Departure from Sofia

After breakfast, transfer to Sofia Airport for your departure flight.
Farewell to Bulgaria and safe travels!
