The last remaining operating narrow gauge line in Bulgaria, Septemvri-Dobrinishte, has a gauge of 760 mm and a total length of almost 125 km. The small train connects the Upper Thracian Plain with the three picturesque mountains of Rhodope, Rila and Pirin, and its route passes through the highest railway station on the Balkan Peninsula – Avramovo station, located at 1267 m above sea level.
The fascinating route, which passes through 35 tunnels and numerous bridges, attracts railway enthusiasts and lovers of authentic experiences from all over the world. Completely understandable – travelling on the Rhodope narrow gauge railway takes you to a more peaceful, simple and carefree world!
The only restored narrow-gauge steam locomotive – 609.76, type 2-10-2T, was manufactured in 1949 in Chrzanow-1 Fabr.Lok.-Polska and has been operating on tourist and charter train trips on the Rhodope line for almost 20 years.
